Mi fiesta de XV años / My Quinceañera Party
Bueno a mi
conocida como “You’re the one that I want” sería la mejor opción. A mi me
no estaba conmigo y yo a veces me sentía sola.
Mi mamá me
trauma.
Ahora me
Some years ago, I was getting ready to celebrate my Quinceañera
party. I remember that, back then, my mom was already living in the United
States. The idea of having
a Quinceañera came to me for the simple reason that I
wanted to buy a pair of Converse sneakers; I suppose it would have been easier
if they had just bought them for me, but perhaps I never clearly expressed my
wish, and it got blown out of proportion until it turned into a full-blown Quinceañera party.
I remember how exciting it was to start thinking about who
would be my “chambelanes” (escorts). I chose the guy who was my boyfriend at
that time and who is now my husband. I also picked two ex-boyfriends and a very
close friend from back then. I recall that a friend of my sister’s, who was
only two years older than us taught us the entire choreography. He even mixed
the music for us onto a disc; incidentally, it didn't sound very good on the
day of the party because the person playing it on the stereo decided to put the
player on the floor, and it bounced so much that the disc kept skipping, haha,
that was a bit stressful; you’ll see it in the video.
Anyway, I was really excited about choosing the music. At
the time, I listened to Moby’s Play & Play: B-Sides album a lot, and I was
determined to dance to a Moby song no matter what, so I chose “Everloving” from
that album. My friend, who was one of my escorts, also helped me pick the
electronic track we danced to. Then, I wasn't sure which song would be
appropriate to help ensure I’d get those Converse sneakers, but the guy who
arranged our choreography thought the song from Grease “You’re the One That I
Want”, would be the best choice. I thought it was an excellent idea.
Back then, I was a teenager in my final semester of middle
school. My mom wasn't with me, and I sometimes felt lonely. That same year, I
also found out I hadn't gotten into the high school I wanted, something that
would trigger a difficult period for me, largely due to the wrong perspective I
chose to take on the situation. Yet, even without guidance, I feel fortunate
that I decided to keep going. I even achieved a 9.3 grade average.
My mom tells me that the cost of my quinceañera was so high
relative to her means that she had to find creative ways to come up with the
extra money. For a while, I felt bad knowing about the sacrifices she made; I
even went so far as to ask that the party be cancelled. It took years for me to
get past that emotional burden.
Now, I am happy to have the video to look back on such an
important day in my life and, at the same time, catch a glimpse of her. I can
see family members and friends who are no longer with us but who live on in my
memories. The video features my Aunt Teodula, who has since passed away, the
very woman who cared for my mom when she was a little girl. She gave me my doll.
I can also revisit the wonderful speech my brother gave when he was just 19
years old; he was always wise beyond his years. I can see my sister, too, who
was just over a month away from becoming a mother for the first time. She was
on the verge of bringing a baby girl into our family, one who would change our
lives forever, filling them with love and new responsibilities.
I am deeply grateful to my mom, for she always showed me
that there is no greater sacrifice than the one made for one’s children to see
them happy. I try to do the same for her now, though nothing I do could ever
compare to what she did, and would still be willing to do, for me.
